Rap music speaks to the hearts and minds of many adolescents. It can reduce depression and anxiety, improve emotional expression, and expand communication skills. In this engaging residency, students will practice the fundamental skills needed to create rap songs. The residency will include musical rhythms, creating rhymes, writing lyrics, public speaking, collaboration, identification of social issues meaningful to the students, as well as personal introspection and encouragement for self-expression. If desired, the residency will culminate in a performance of the students’ work for an audience of peers or parents.
