Universal Design for Learning
LBC Education Studio

Instructor:
Dr. Ryan Hourigan
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an instructional framework that provides students with multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression within the context of their own constructed meaning of the content. The UDL framework was inspired by research into the brain and how the networks of the brain work together to help a student learn. The three networks in question are the Affective Networks (why?), the Recognition Networks (what?); and the Strategic Networks (how?). Each person’s brain is constructed differently. Therefore, each brain utilizes these networks differently. This workshop will show how the arts, combined with UDL, can make a classroom more inclusive for all styles of learning and for students who bring different experiences and backgrounds to the classroom and how the arts can be used to enhance this framework.
