Cenicienta: A Bilingual Cinderella Story

by Glass Half Full Theatre

Grades K-6

Ten-year-old Latina Belinda is a budding poet and storyteller. When she’s stuck in the basement  while her stepmother and stepsisters prepare for a party they’re hosting upstairs, Belinda reenacts her version of the classic tale Cinderella using creativity and everyday household objects—a napkin, a teapot, doilies, just to name a few. When Belinda learns that the party’s special guest is her hero, real life writer Gary Soto, she realizes she must stand up for herself and take charge of her dreams if she wants to share her writing with him. This captivating bilingual one-woman performance is a modern spin on the beloved fairy tale and tackles cultural heritage, family, and the power of language.

LBC performance may not include pieces from above video.

  • 6.RL.7: Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they “see” and “hear” when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.

Lesson Plan Idea

Using items from around the classroom, students recreate their own favorite stories. Discuss afterward what lessons we can learn from them.

Extend your field trip to LBC with Art Talks!

Take your students on a self-guided or docent-led tour of our Sculpture Garden. Thoughtfully restored following the 2017 firestorms, our Sculpture Garden is designed to reflect the local Sonoma County landscape. In the Garden, there are two picnic tables with smaller versions of the sculpture elements that you see in the landscape. If you like, have students find new ways to arrange the colorful pieces. Then please leave what they have made for the next visitors to enjoy.

You can sign up for a free docent-led tour right on your School Show application or contact us by email or phone at 707.800.7504!
