Luther Burbank Center for the Arts (LBC) celebrates the 12th annual Fiesta de Independencia on Sunday, September 12 from 2:00 – 3:00PM. Organized by the Center’s Latino Advisory Council, this one-hour, FREE event on September 12^th will include performances by Ballet Folklórico Ireri, LBC’s own mariachi ensemble: Mariachi Cantares de mi Tierra, and a special headline performance by Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán. LBC is also proud that the Mexican Consulate of San Francisco will continue to participate in El Grito, a moving re-enactment of the history-making Cry of Dolores.

“We are proud to work with members of the LBC Latino Advisory Council (LAC) and our partners at Redwood Credit Union to provide this celebration of culture for the 12^th year in a row. We invite every member of our community, regardless of background, to join us in honoring and uplifting the vivid texture of our community fabric. Fiesta de Independencia is a way to commemorate both individual and collective heritage,” states Ashleigh Worley, Director of Education and Community Engagement.

Long-time member of LAC and LBC Honorary Board Member, Ernesto Olivares reflects, “For many years, the Fiesta has brought people together to recognize and honor the rich culture of our community’s residents.  While 2020 was a very difficult year, today there is much to celebrate as we continue to recover and heal—the fiesta is the perfect place for this.  I invite everyone to join us as we celebrate our histories and cultures through the universal language music, food, and art.”

Fiesta de Independencia began at the Center in 2010 to commemorate Mexican Independence Day (September 16) and has since evolved to celebrate the rich history of the diverse Latino cultures and people who are an integral part of the North Bay community. In past years, drawing more than 4,000 community members, the event has become a Sonoma County tradition, serving as a kickoff to Latino Heritage month, which runs September 15^th-October 15^th.  The Fiesta is a community-wide celebration of cultures, people, and traditions that also educates the community about Hispanic history and Latino businesses in Sonoma County. In 2020, the LBC made the decision to continue the tradition virtually to huge success.

This year, in an abundance of caution as the event draws huge crowds and is family-focused, LBC has decided to keep the celebration virtual for one more year; however, they are thrilled to be able to offer the amazing talent of Vargas. Worley states, “We are honored to have Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán perform at our 12^th annual Fiesta de Independencia. This is only possible to have Vargas because it will be a virtual event, in any other year, this would not be possible. We’re thrilled to be able to bring the talents of Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán right into the homes of viewers!”

The LBC will be streaming Fiesta de Independencia on their website, premiering on Sept 12^th at 2pm and will continue to be available for viewing thereafter. Along with Fiesta, the LBC will be featuring virtual events all-month long to celebrate Latino Heritage month. For more than half a century the name Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán has been synonymous with greatness. Founded in 1897 by Gaspar Vargas, the group originated in the Jalisco city of Tecalitlán as a musical quartet not yet imagining the worldwide influence they would have in Mexican music history. By the 1930’s the group grew to eight musicians and relocated to Mexico City under the leadership of Gaspar’s son Silvestre Vargas. After playing for the inauguration of President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1934, Vargas’ celebrated national presence and success skyrocketed.

Under Silvestre’s visionary leadership and the incomparable musical direction of Ruben Fuentes, Mariachi Vargas went on to work with some of the most celebrated singer and composers such as José Alfredo Jimenez, Lola Beltrán, Pedro Infante and also appeared in over 200 films during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema.  By the 1950’s Mariachi Vargas had earned the title of “el mejor mariachi del mundo”, a title that has endured through the ages and earned them tremendous musical respect.

Throughout the latter part of the 20^th century Mariachi Vargas continued to grow under the direction of José “Pepe” Martínez who continued to modernize the genre with meticulously crafted arrangements, highly qualified musicians and musical gusto unmatched by any other group. In 1987, Mariachi Vargas went on to assist in the recording of  Linda Rondstadt’s Grammy award winning album Canciones de Mi Padre, and later went on to tour with Linda. The Canciones de Mi Padre tour opened the door to the American audience and would further influence and define the mariachi genre throughout the world.

In 2014 the musical direction of Mariachi Vargas passed from Pepe Martinez to his nephew Carlos Martinez. Now in their sixth generation, the 14-piece ensemble continues to defy boundaries and enthrall audiences with their performances under Carlos’ direction. Most recently Vargas backed up the iconic singer Luis Miguel on his ¡México Por Siempre! Albu and went on to internationally tour with him throughout México, the United States, Canada and Spain. They also headlined the tour 200 Años de Música Mexicana alongside Banda El Recodo. Their most recent album, Concierto Sinfónico de Aniversario, is Mariachi Vargas’ first ever studio produced alongside a symphony and includes classics from José Alfredo Jimenez, Bésame Mucho, and a heartwarming rendition of the West Side Story classic song Maria in both English and Spanish.

Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán continues to defy what mariachi is and uphold their reputation as “El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo”– the greatest mariachi in the world.

Fiesta de Independencia

El Luther Burbank Center for the Arts (LBC por sus siglas en inglés) celebra la 12ª Fiesta anual de Independencia el domingo 12 de septiembre de 2:00 a 3:00 PM. Organizado por el Consejo Asesor Latino del Centro, este evento GRATUITO de una hora de duración incluirá actuaciones del grupo el Ballet Folklórico Ireri, el conjunto de mariachi propio del LBC:  Mariachi Cantares de mi Tierra, y una actuación especial del Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán. El LBC también se enorgullece de que el Consulado Mexicano en San Francisco continúe participando en El Grito, una conmovedora recreación HISTÓRICA del Grito de Dolores.

Ernesto Olivares, miembro honorario de la Junta Directiva de LAC y de LBC desde hace mucho tiempo, comenta: “Durante muchos años, la Fiesta ha reunido a la gente para reconocer y honrar la rica cultura de los residentes de nuestra comunidad.  Si bien el 2020 fue un año muy difícil, hoy hay mucho que celebrar mientras continuamos recuperándonos y sanando y la fiesta es el lugar perfecto para esto.  Invito a todos a unirse a nosotros mientras celebramos nuestras historias y culturas a través del lenguaje universal, la música, la comida y el arte”.

La Fiesta de Independencia comenzó en el Centro en el 2010 para conmemorar el Día de la Independencia de México (el 16 de septiembre) y desde entonces ha evolucionado para celebrar la rica historia de las diversas culturas y personas latinas que son parte integral de la comunidad de North Bay. En los últimos años, el evento se ha convertido en una tradición del Condado de Sonoma, atrayendo a más de 4,000 miembros de la comunidad y sirviendo como la fecha de inicio para el mes de la herencia latina, que se extiende del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre.  La Fiesta es una celebración comunitaria de culturas, personas y tradiciones que también educa a la comunidad sobre la historia hispana y los negocios latinos en el Condado de Sonoma. En el 2020, el LBC tomó la decisión de continuar la tradición prácticamente con gran éxito.

Este año, con mucha precaución ya que el evento atrae a grandes multitudes y se centra en la familia, LBC ha decidido mantener la celebración virtual durante un año más; sin embargo, están encantados de poder ofrecer el increíble talento del Mariachi Vargas. Worley afirma: “Nos sentimos honrados de que el Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán se presentará en nuestra 12ª Fiesta de Independencia anual y será posible porque será un evento virtual, en cualquier otro año, esto no sería posible. ¡Estamos encantados de poder llevar el talento del Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlán directamente a las casas de los espectadores!”

El LBC transmitirá La Fiesta de Independencia en su sitio web, se estrenará el 12de septiembre a las 2 p.m. y continuará disponible para su visualización a partir de entonces. Durante más de medio siglo el nombre del Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán ha sido sinónimo de grandeza. Fundado en 1897 por Gaspar Vargas, el grupo se originó en la ciudad jalisciense de Tecalitlán como un cuarteto musical que aún no imaginaba la influencia mundial que tendrían en la historia de la música mexicana. En la década de 1930 el grupo creció a ocho músicos y se trasladó a la Ciudad de México bajo el liderazgo del hijo de Gaspar, Silvestre Vargas. Después de tocar para la toma de posesión del presidente Lázaro Cárdenas en 1934, la célebre presencia nacional y el éxito del mariachi se dispararon.

Bajo el liderazgo visionario de Silvestre y la incomparable dirección musical de Rubén Fuentes, el Mariachi Vargas pasó a trabajar con algunos de los cantantes y compositores más célebres como José Alfredo Jiménez, Lola Beltrán, Pedro Infante y también apareció en más de 200 películas durante la Edad de Oro del Cine Mexicano.  En la década de 1950, el Mariachi Vargas se había ganado el título de “el mejor mariachi del mundo”, título que ha perdurado a través de los siglos y les ha valido un tremendo respeto musical.

A lo largo de la última década del siglo XX, el Mariachi Vargas continuó creciendo bajo la dirección de José “Pepe” Martínez que continuó modernizando el género con arreglos meticulosamente elaborados, músicos altamente calificados y un gusto musical sin igual comparado con cualquier otro grupo. En 1987, Mariachi Vargas pasó a ayudar en la grabación del álbum ganador del Grammy de Linda Rondstadt  Canciones de Mi Padre,y más tarde se fue de gira con Linda. La gira de Canciones de Mi Padre  abrió la puerta al público estadounidense e influiría y definiría aún más el género del mariachi en todo el mundo.

En 2014 la dirección musical del Mariachi Vargas pasó de Pepe Martínez a su sobrino Carlos Martínez. Ahora, en su sexta generación, el conjunto de 14 músicos continúa desafiando los límites y cautivando al público con sus actuaciones bajo la dirección de Carlos. Recientemente, respaldó al icónico cantante Luis Miguel en su álbum ¡México Por Siempre! y realizó una gira internacional con él por México, Estados Unidos, Canadá y España. También encabezaron la gira 200 Años de Música Mexicana junto a la Banda El Recodo. Su álbum más reciente, Concierto Sinfónico de Aniversario, se produjo en un estudio junto con una sinfónica e incluye clásicos de José Alfredo Jiménez, Bésame Mucho, y una conmovedora interpretación de la canción clásica María de West Side Story en inglés y español.

El Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán continúa desafiando lo que es el mariachi y manteniendo su reputación como“El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo”, el más grande del mundo.
