STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN LBC’S YOUTH MARIACHI ENSEMBLE
RECEIVE ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY
TO PERFORM WITH LEGENDARY MARIACHI VARGAS!

SANTA ROSA, CA (October 15, 2021)—On October 29, 2021 Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, presented by CBC Events and Serpiente Star will be performing at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts (LBC). This show is not only special because the group is “the best mariachi in the world” but also because students from the LBC’s very own youth mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Cantares de mi Tierra, have been invited to join the performers on stage! LBC’s Music Specialist, José Soto, working with Impressario Ambrosio Vigil, local promoter and long-time member of LBC’s Latino Advisory Council helped make this opportunity possible.

Led by Soto, twenty-nine talented students will have the incredible opportunity to open for Mariachi Vargas, performing traditional mariachi songs such as la Malagueña. They will then come back to close the performance, sharing the stage with the renowned Vargas. Students have been meeting three times a week to diligently prepare for the performance. “The first time I played with Mariachi Vargas was at the LBC while I was in high school. I’m amazed that my students will now have the same opportunity and enjoy every single moment on stage with the best mariachi in the world. Playing a song with Vargas is dream come true for most mariachi players,” said Soto.
Over the summer Soto worked with members of Mariachi Vargas to bring them in as special guest instructors for the Center’s intensive virtual summer camp. Students met for three weeks to practice new music, learn about mariachi history, and instrumental/voice techniques. Vargas also headlined the 12th Annual Fiesta de Independencia, held virtually this year that is still available on LBC’s website to view On Demand; all leading up to the collaboration with Vigil and Soto to create a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students to join the group on stage.

Soto concluded, “We appreciate the support we have received from our local radio stations, Ambrosio Vigil, and Mariachi Vargas to make this possible. This is the first performance the Ensemble will have given in front of a live audience since March 2020.”

Mariachi Vargas is one of the most representative regional Mexican music groups in the world. This mariachi had its origins during the year 1898 in Tepatitlán, Jalisco under the direction of maestro Gaspar Vargas López. Their popularity and influence in the musical world have made them self-named as the Best Mariachi in the World and, we have to admit that they have earned that name. In addition to Mexico, they have played in different parts of the world such as the United States, Europe, China. Japan, to name a few. Such a special group, with so much trajectory and talent, is the origin of an endless number of songs that fill our hearts and represent in a wonderful way what it is to be Mexican such as: Guadalajara, Son de la negra, El Jarabe Tapatia, Cielito Lindo, Huapango de Moncayo, among many others.
