The Arts Build More Than Creativity
When young people pick up an instrument, step into a dance class, or connect with a visiting artist, they’re developing more than creative skills. They’re strengthening the social and emotional abilities that help them succeed in school, relationships, and life.
Research shows that arts education supports social-emotional learning (SEL) by fostering self-awareness, empathy, collaboration, communication, and resilience. Through creative expression, students learn to navigate emotions, work with others, and build confidence, skills that are increasingly recognized as essential to overall well-being and academic success.
At Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, these opportunities come to life through a variety of education and community engagement programs. Professional artist residencies bring creativity directly into classrooms, encouraging students to explore ideas, share perspectives, and collaborate with peers. A student who may be reluctant to speak up in class might find the confidence to share an original poem or work with classmates to create a mural, learning that their voice matters and that every contribution has value.
School performances introduce thousands of students to world-class artists and stories that expand cultural understanding and spark curiosity. A theater production or musical performance can invite students to see life through another person’s eyes, opening conversations about empathy, identity, and shared experiences. For some students, simply encountering an unfamiliar art form can spark a new appreciation for cultures and perspectives different from their own.
Our after-school Mariachi and Ballet Folklórico programs provide students with a welcoming environment where they develop discipline, teamwork, and pride in cultural traditions. A young mariachi musician learns to listen carefully to fellow performers and adjust to stay in harmony. A Ballet Folklórico dancer who misses a step during rehearsal learns perseverance and the importance of encouraging teammates rather than dwelling on mistakes. Together, students discover that success comes not from individual achievement alone, but from supporting one another.
Meanwhile, our Music for Schools instrument lending library helps remove financial barriers by providing free access to instruments, ensuring that more students can experience the confidence and sense of belonging that come with making music. For a child receiving an instrument for the first time, the experience of practicing, improving, and eventually performing can teach patience, responsibility, and pride in personal accomplishment.
These programs do more than nurture artistic talent; they help young people find their voices, connect with their communities, and build skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Every lesson, performance, and creative experience becomes an opportunity to strengthen empathy, perseverance, self-expression, and a sense of belonging.
Thanks to the generosity of donors and members, Luther Burbank Center continues to create spaces where creativity and connection flourish. Together, we are helping young people grow into compassionate, confident individuals, one artistic experience at a time.
