Discover Art Together: New Art Walk Activity Guide for Families

Exploring art is more fun when you have a few clues to follow, and now families can turn a visit to the LBC into an art-filled adventure with our new free Art Walk Activity Guide for Families.

Designed especially for young visitors and the adults who explore with them, the guide invites families to slow down, look closely, talk, and experience the LBC Art Walk together in new ways. It creates opportunities for children to connect more deeply with art through observation, comparison, questions, critical thinking, and creativity.

“When children have the opportunity to explore art in a way that feels playful and approachable, they begin to see the arts as something that belongs to them,” said (name the person). “Those early experiences can become the foundation for a lifelong curiosity and connection to the arts.”

Here’s what’s inside the Activity Guide:

• Start with a simple map that points the way to the Sculpture Garden, Sculpture Courtyard, and other works throughout the campus. Families can also scan a QR code to access the full interactive Art Walk map and learn more about the art along the way.
• Become an art detective! The guide challenges children to explore the Art Walk in search of specific shapes, colors, textures and features. Can you find a perfect circle? Something red? A sculpture that looks like it could tip over? Something shiny that reflects light? A piece with holes you can see through? Each prompt encourages children to observe the artwork carefully and think about what they see.
• Mural I-Spy activity inspired by Four Seasons: A Celebration of Community and Environmental Beauty by the renowned artist, Maria De Los Angeles, originally from Santa Rosa. Maria incorporated hidden images throughout the mural to celebrate the community in Sonoma County. Families can search for some of those images and see what other details they discover along the way.
• Make your own art. The creativity doesn’t stop with discovery. On the final page, children are invited to draw one of the sculptures they’ve seen or imagine and draw a sculpture of their own.

And there’s a little something waiting at the end: Children who bring their completed booklet to the Box Office can choose a treasure from the LBC treasure box. Box Office hours are Tuesday–Friday, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
